EmailEngineの開発に使用したツール
Andris Reinman built EmailEngine from a hard-won IMAP problem, got more than 1,000 GitHub stars before revenue worked, and reached $1K MRR in July 2022.
Andris Reinman knew the email problem from the inside. In 2012, while working at Pipedrive, he was asked to build email integration for a CRM and learned how hard IMAP is at scale. Years later, while building an open-source email debugging app, he wrote an IMAP library from scratch and realized it could become a broader product: EmailEngine, a REST API layer that hides IMAP, MIME and RFC822 complexity from application developers.
The first monetization attempt looked good in open-source terms and weak in business terms. EmailEngine gained more than 1,000 GitHub stars, but only three subscribers over about a year and a half. Andris eventually rewrote the app, changed the model so the code could be inspected but needed a paid license key to run, and saw previously free users convert within about a week. He made more revenue in two weeks than in the prior 1.5 years.
By July 2022, EmailEngine reached $1,000 MRR. The main channel was not ads or launch hype; it was documentation and open-source distribution. Andris wrote that about 60% of homepage traffic came from his open-source projects, with roughly 6,000 monthly unique visitors to the homepage. His Indie Hackers profile later listed EmailEngine at $10K MRR, without a precise milestone date. The lesson is sharp: GitHub stars can create credibility, but a developer infrastructure product still needs a clear paid license and a narrow enough niche to charge fairly.
Open-source popularity is not a business model until it creates a reason to pay.
A narrow technical niche can be stronger than a broad platform promise when the pain is deep.
Documentation and related open-source projects can become durable acquisition channels.
Changing packaging can unlock revenue without changing the core product.
