Michele and Mathias Hansen launched Geocodio as a side project in January 2014. A roughly $30 first month covered their small DigitalOcean server bill and proved strangers would pay.
Michele and Mathias Hansen built Geocodio because they needed it themselves. They wanted to store geocoding results for their own projects, but major providers' pricing and terms made that awkward. So they built a small geocoder and launched it publicly in January 2014. Their dream outcome was deliberately tiny: if other users covered the server bill, the project would be a success.
The launch reached developer communities including Hacker News, and the first month did exactly what they hoped. In a founder interview, Michele recalled roughly $30 in first-month revenue, enough to cover two small DigitalOcean servers and feel like a win. That was not venture-scale traction, but it proved strangers would pay for a boring infrastructure tool.
Geocodio's current about page still leans into the same durability: geocoding as 'lumber' for software, stable APIs, no breaking surprises and customer support from people who actually build the product. The company now describes itself as serving over 150,000 people and processing billions of addresses, but the origin lesson is smaller and more useful: a side project can become a real business when it solves an unglamorous problem customers keep running into.
A tiny success threshold can make it easier to launch useful infrastructure before over-planning it.
Boring developer problems can become durable businesses when the pain repeats and alternatives have real constraints.
Covering costs in month one is a meaningful validation signal for a bootstrapped side project.
Long-term reliability and kind support can be stronger positioning than novelty.
