Founder stories
Derived recurring component only: public sources report about $25,000 in the past four weeks/month and MRR Story says subscriptions are 70% of revenue, with lifetime access and consulting making up the rest.
AI-assisted guitar tone matching app that adapts famous song settings to the player's own guitar, amp, pedals, and gear.
How Kyan acquired customers
Tools used to build ToneAdapt
Kyan Santiago-Calling built ToneAdapt as a fast guitar-tone matching project, then used TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and relentless short-form demos to reach 100,000+ users and a reported $25K/month revenue run-rate.
Kyan Santiago-Calling did not start with a venture-backed music-tech roadmap. He was a 21-year-old SDSU computer science student who had started playing guitar, fallen into 80s metal, and kept hitting the same beginner wall: tutorials showed tones built on expensive rigs, while his own amp and guitar sounded different. ToneAdapt began as a resume project and a personal fix for that frustration.
ToneAdapt asks for the song a guitarist wants to play and the gear they actually own, then translates the original rig into settings for that user's guitar, amp, pedals, and effects. The live product page still explains the same promise: researched rig data, then re-dialed for the exact gear in the player's room. That made the product unusually easy to show on camera. A screen recording could prove the before-and-after value faster than a landing page could explain it.
Starter Story says Kyan built the first version over Thanksgiving break in about a week, using AI coding tools and shipping the rough web version before polishing the brand. SDVoyager says he started building in December as a resume project. A founder-owned LinkedIn snippet says ToneAdapt shipped on December 8, 2025, and the public timeline shows January revenue, so the structured first-customer milestone is encoded conservatively as paid revenue by the end of January rather than inventing an exact checkout date.
The first traction came from places where guitarists already compared sounds: X build-in-public posts, Reddit guitar communities, TikTok, and Instagram. MRR Story says the first paid customers were followers who wanted to support the build, and that one phone-screen TikTok demo crossed 1 million views. SDVoyager says growth to 115,000+ users came with no paid advertising through TikTok and Instagram videos that reached millions of views.
Public sources consistently put ToneAdapt around $25,000 per month or trailing-four-week revenue in mid-2026. Starter Story breaks that down as roughly $11,500 web revenue plus $14,000 mobile revenue in the past four weeks, with 397 active mobile subscribers and about 1,400 new web subscribers over three months. MRR Story adds the useful caveat: about 70% came from subscriptions, with lifetime access and consulting making up the rest. For the data model, only the recurring subscription component is stored as current MRR; the full $25K/month result stays in the public story copy as mixed revenue.
ToneAdapt is a clean example of a narrow hobby pain point becoming a monetized app because the demo itself was shareable. The lesson is not simply 'post on TikTok.' It is to pick a problem where the result can be seen quickly, ship a paid version before the edge cases are gone, and keep turning the best-performing demo format into distribution until retention becomes the next constraint.
Choose a niche pain point where the product result is easy to demonstrate in a short video
Ship the first paid version before the brand and data set are perfect, then let users reveal the missing cases
Separate mixed monthly revenue from recurring subscription revenue when encoding milestones
Use communities for early proof, then repeat the content format that converts
You have the story. Make it actionable: what worked, what to copy, what to avoid, and which channel to test first.
