Founder stories
Founder-owned post says Oh Dear had launched in private beta earlier that year, had been running in production for a few months, and was already generating over $1,500 per month. Kept as historical early revenue, not a current 2026 revenue claim.
An all-in-one website monitoring platform for uptime, SSL certificates, broken links, cron jobs, DNS changes, performance, domain expiry and site health.
How Mattias acquired customers
Tools used to build Oh Dear
Mattias Geniar and Freek Van der Herten turned their developer-plus-sysadmin blind spots into Oh Dear, a website monitoring SaaS that reached more than $1.5K per month within its first production months.
Mattias Geniar and Freek Van der Herten did not start Oh Dear from a generic startup idea. They were already responsible for keeping real client websites healthy from two different angles. Mattias came from infrastructure and server administration, where certificate, DNS and server failures cause quiet outages. Freek came from a web-agency and Laravel/open-source background, where a site can look up while broken links, mixed content and page-level errors are still damaging the user experience.
That split view became the product wedge. Existing uptime tools mostly pinged a homepage. Oh Dear watched more of the real website: uptime from multiple locations, SSL certificates, broken links, mixed content and later status pages, cron monitoring, performance, DNS, domains and application health. The founders built the MVP in evenings and weekends using Laravel Spark so they could spend less time on billing, accounts and VAT mechanics and more time on the monitoring checks they wished existed.
The early distribution was not a cold launch. Both founders had spent years writing, tweeting, speaking and contributing in the PHP/Laravel world. They shared screenshots, code snippets and design decisions before the product was ready, then invited that trusted audience into a private beta. Freek's own recap says Oh Dear had launched in private beta earlier that year, had been running in production for a few months, and was already generating more than $1,500 per month.
The lesson is not that every founder needs a huge audience. It is that trust earned before launch can make a narrow infrastructure product credible on day one. Oh Dear worked because it combined two operator perspectives into one product, then sold to people who already trusted the founders to care about boring-but-expensive website failures.
A strong SaaS wedge can come from combining two adjacent operator pain points rather than copying a category leader.
Trust earned through years of writing, open-source work and community presence can substitute for paid launch distribution.
Using a SaaS starter kit for accounts, billing and tax can be rational when the product's differentiation is somewhere else.
Monitoring products win when they cover the failures customers actually discover too late, not only the easiest uptime check.
You have the story. Make it actionable: what worked, what to copy, what to avoid, and which channel to test first.
