How Peter acquired customers
Tools used to build Mangools
After years of failed prototypes and freelance work, Peter Hrbacik built KWFinder in about a month, launched it to Hacker News and Reddit, and grew the simple SEO tool into Mangools, a bootstrapped suite reporting roughly $223k/month by 2018.
Peter Hrbacik had wanted an online product since he was a kid programming in Slovakia, but Mangools was not his first try. He built prototype after prototype around web development, affiliate sites, e-commerce, domaining, and SaaS. Most of them failed to find product-market fit, so he kept taking freelance work to pay the bills even though he wanted to own the product he worked on.
KWFinder came from his own frustration with keyword research tools. He wanted to find popular niches with low SEO competition, but the tools he tried felt ugly, complicated, or not mobile-friendly. So he built a simple web-based keyword research tool in about a month, launched the rough version to Hacker News and Reddit, and got unusually positive feedback. After two more months of polish, the improved version started converting real SEO users. Over the next 18 months, KWFinder reached about $5,000 in monthly recurring revenue with very little maintenance.
The bigger move was turning a single focused tool into Mangools: a suite of simple, standalone SEO products under one billing and support brand. Peter kept the product easy to understand instead of copying giant all-in-one tools. Early growth came from Show HN, Reddit, reviews, forums, word of mouth, and an affiliate program that later contributed around 10% of revenue. By July 2018, the bootstrapped company was reporting roughly $223,000 per month and still competing on simplicity, affordability, and usability rather than enterprise breadth.
A focused tool can win a crowded market when the incumbents feel too complicated for the job customers actually need done.
Community launches work best when the product already solves the founder's own concrete pain.
