How Alex acquired customers
Tools used to build Calm
Alex Tew, creator of the Million Dollar Homepage, teamed up with Michael Acton Smith to build Calm to $2B valuation.
As a teenager, Alex Tew became interested in how to improve the mind. He explored memory techniques, idea generation, and focus. Then he discovered mindfulness meditation.
"Soon with daily practice, I began to feel calmer, more focused and happier."
Before Calm, Alex Tew was famous for The Million Dollar Homepage - selling one million pixels at $1 each to finance his university education. It became a viral sensation.
But the success came with stress: "During whirlwind years of university and my first start-up, I was no longer taking time to calm my mind - just when I needed it most."
Alex had an early idea for a meditation website but ran out of cash. Years later, after getting back on track with regular meditation, he returned to the idea.
"After getting back on track and launching a string of ventures, it was time to return to the idea of bringing meditation to the world by leveraging the power of the internet."
"I got together with my close friend Michael Acton Smith and we launched Calm in 2012." Michael was known for Moshi Monsters, a children's gaming phenomenon.
