How Kayla acquired customers
Tools used to build Sweat
Kayla Itsines started at 18 training women in her parents backyard in Adelaide, created a PDF workout guide that went viral on Instagram, and sold her Sweat app for $400M.
"Sometimes I think about what I would say to 18-year-old me if I could go back in time, standing in my parents' backyard with a whiteboard, training my clients with absolutely no idea where this journey would take me," shares Kayla.
At 18, Kayla graduated as a master trainer from the Australian Institute of Fitness. She was training women in their backyards, at the beach, at a women's only personal training centre, going to people's houses - doing everything she could for women in Adelaide, South Australia.
"And then I downloaded Instagram." When Kayla first joined Instagram, there were no Reels, no Stories, and no fitness influencers. "I was just a personal trainer, online, sharing my life and my clients' transformation photos and... it just took off."
People were asking for her workouts, so she wrote them down and made a PDF - exactly how she was training her clients. A 12-week program with three workouts a week, 28 minutes each. The BBG (Bikini Body Guide) went viral, with millions of women downloading it worldwide.
In 2015, the Sweat with Kayla app launched. Today it's home to 60+ unique programs created by female personal trainers, 13,000+ workouts, and hundreds of recipes.
In 2021, Sweat was acquired by iFIT Health & Fitness for $400 million AUD - one of the largest fitness app acquisitions ever.
