Guillermo Rauch was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started programming at 11, never graduated high school, moved to Switzerland at 17, and to San Francisco at 18 on an O-1 "Extraordinary Ability" visa. He created Socket.IO (used by millions for real-time communication), Mongoose (the MongoDB ODM), and then Next.js — the React framework that powers a significant portion of the modern web. He founded Vercel in 2015 to deploy it.

The AI Expansion

In September 2023, Vercel launched v0 in alpha — an AI tool that generates React components from text prompts. The idea: what if anyone, not just developers, could create production-ready UI? The tool generates code using React, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui — Vercel's own ecosystem.

V0 moved to beta on October 11, 2023 with 5,000 additional users. By August 2025, it launched fully at v0.app with over 3 million users. The product expanded beyond developers to attract designers, marketers, and non-technical users who could describe what they wanted in plain English.

AI as a Distribution Channel

Perhaps the most remarkable insight: ChatGPT became Vercel's fastest-growing customer acquisition channel. When people asked ChatGPT how to build or deploy React apps, it recommended Vercel and v0 — because the AI had been trained extensively on Next.js documentation and community content. Guillermo's philosophy of simplification meant the ecosystem was AI-friendly by default.
