Where the idea came from

Personal pain

Samy was active on Twitter and noticed there was no way to schedule Twitter threads (only single tweets), so he tweeted his own audience asking whether such a tool existed. Nothing came up, so he built one himself. Hypefury's own about page frames it explicitly as scratching their own itch, not a researched market opportunity.

Built a rough MVP (thread scheduling, per third-party accounts using Google Apps Script and Sheets) and shipped it directly to the people who had responded to his original tweet, as a private beta rather than a landing page, waitlist, or survey.

Keeping the beta limited to a small number of spots created scarcity and made early users feel like insiders, which Yannick frames as an important first step in building a loyal following before the product could do everything users wanted.

They tweeted frequently and plugged a free Twitter-growth course underneath posts that performed well, which fed an email funnel. Separately, the record's own storyContent and this same AMA both note that Hypefury's branding appears on the tweets sent through it, so other users see the tool being used by accounts they already follow.

They ran an affiliate program early on, paying users and outside creators to recommend the product, which Yannick frames as outsourcing marketing to a crowd of people who only get paid on results.

The same channel had a downside: some affiliates broke the program's terms of service by bidding on Hypefury's own brand name in Google Ads, which didn't bring in new users, just intercepted people already searching for the brand while costing far more per click than generic keywords.

Their first dedicated hire was a customer-success person, brought on as the team grew past the two co-founders.

It was a poor fit and they had underestimated how much business-specific knowledge the role needed, and by their own admission they let the mismatched relationship run too long before ending it.

What they did instead: Hired a more experienced customer success person afterward and expanded the team from there, plus later a CTO to oversee developers.

As their affiliate program grew, multiple affiliates began running Google Ads bidding on Hypefury's own brand name, which was explicitly against the program's terms.

Brand-term ads from affiliates intercepted people already looking for Hypefury by name rather than reaching new audiences, so it subtracted from brand value without adding visibility, and branded clicks cost far more than the generic keyword terms they'd have preferred affiliates bid on instead.

What they did instead: Called out as a violation of their own affiliate ToS; no specific enforcement mechanism is described beyond flagging it as not allowed.

How it changed as they grew

At launch: 1 person (Samy Dindane, solo)

Roughly a year before the July 2021 AMA (so around mid-2020), they raised prices, which lifted MRR by half even though they expected some churn as a result.

Pricing restructure: Lowest-priced entry tier retained → Lowest tier discontinued, existing subscribers not grandfathered

A few months after crossing $10K MRR (per Yannick, that milestone itself landed around July or August 2020), they discontinued their cheapest plan without grandfathering the users on it, justified by how many features had shipped since that tier was originally priced.

What broke as they grew

Rather than product-market fit (which their own account suggests came quickly, via direct demos and beta users who converted to paying without being asked), the constraint they describe at the growth stage is decision overload on the roadmap: many different users wanting different things, with no formal system to prioritize until they adopted a feedback-voting tool (Acute) to rank requests by demand.
