Where the idea came from

Pivot from prior productPivot from Hotspot (a platform connecting hotels with travel influencers for sponsored collaborations)

Marie Martens and Filip Minev's first venture together, Hotspot, was going to connect hotels with travel influencers. They validated it with a landing page and a Google Form, quit their jobs, and were heading toward Bali to run it as digital nomads when COVID-19 hit mid-trip; lockdowns then caused half of Hotspot's hotel clients to churn with no end to the travel shutdown in sight. Needing a form themselves (for an unrelated COVID-relief fundraiser for healthcare workers) and frustrated again by expensive, clunky existing form tools, they decided to abandon Hotspot and build their own simple form builder instead.

By Tally's second year (2022), the binding constraint on growth wasn't demand but the two founders' own time: as the free user base grew, more and more of it went to customer support, moderation, and administration, crowding out product work. That pressure is what pushed them toward their first hire the following year.
