Habits-Schriftsteller baut Newsletter mit 3M+ Abonnenten im Wert von $20M+ auf

jamesclear.com grew out of a pivot away from Passive Panda, a make-money business site Clear had written for two years and then shut down. The new site narrowed to what he actually wanted to write about: habits and performance, shared as notes on what he was learning himself. His 2013 about page frames the goal as teaching everything he learns, and he later described the twice-weekly schedule as the way he found his voice and built an audience from zero.

The early audience grew out of the twice-weekly articles and the free newsletter signup itself. Clear later said that for years he deliberately skipped social media and relied on writing and the newsletter alone; by the time of his first Annual Review (about 13 months after the Nov 12, 2012 launch) 40,637 people had subscribed.

The first paid product was the 2014 Habits Workshop, a two-hour live online class on January 28, 2014, announced to the newsletter list (49,107 subscribers that week) on January 20, 2014 and sold through Gumroad. That is about 14.5 months after the November 12, 2012 launch, not day 30 as the story record has it. The live ticket price is not stated in the saved text; the recording was sold at $49 from April 2014 onward.
