Notion's original 2013 pitch deck (which Zhao says still describes the company today) framed the opportunity as billions of people locked into rigid Microsoft or Google office suites with no real alternative, needing flexible 'building blocks for software' instead.

To get Notion 1.0's early users, Zhao and co-founder Simon Last engineered a Product Hunt push: they asked early investor Naval Ravikant to wake up at midnight when the daily list reset and tweet his large following to vote for Notion.

Zhao says the 1.0 launch was the first place Notion pushed the product out to people, and that the founders learned what those users actually valued by talking to them directly in support afterwards. Notion's own site two months after that launch shows the money side of it: free for up to 5 collaborators, then 5 dollars per collaborator per month, charged through a live Stripe key, so the first paying accounts were free workspaces that outgrew the collaborator cap.
