Holiday says the ad spend was not unprofitable, but he stopped it anyway because it felt hollow compared to making lasting content, and redirected the entire budget into an in-house content team instead.

After cutting paid ads, hired a videographer, a social media manager, and a researcher, then built out a content team that launched the Daily Stoic podcast and YouTube channel.

The podcast was seeded by promoting it directly to the existing email list rather than relying on organic podcast discovery, giving it an initial audience from day one.

Products are launched to the audience directly, with no outside marketing or PR. When Holiday self-published The Boy Who Would Be King through his own store, one email and one social post sold more than 5,000 copies in the first week.

Holiday had been collecting reader emails since his first book in 2012, so by the time he had something to sell he owned the relationship with the buyers instead of renting it from a retailer or platform.
