How Brett acquired customers
Tools used to build DesignJoy
Brett Williams had been designing since 2009. In 2017 he launched DesignJoy β a subscription design service. A viral tweet in 2020 doubled his MRR overnight. By 2022, he broke $1.5M ARR as a true agency of one.
Brett Williams had been designing since 2009, grinding through freelance work for years. In June 2017, he launched DesignJoy on Product Hunt β a subscription-based design service where clients pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited requests, delivered one at a time within 24-48 hours.
The model was radically simple. No discovery calls. No onboarding process. No meetings. Clients submit requests through a board, Brett delivers designs within 1-2 business days, and the cycle repeats. The simplicity was the product.
For the first few years, growth was steady but unremarkable.
The breakthrough came in early 2020 when Brett joined Twitter and started building in public. He shared his revenue, his processes, his wins and his struggles β transparently. A single viral tweet giving a shoutout to his "one-man design agency" sent hundreds of people to DesignJoy's website, shooting his monthly revenue from $80K to $160K in a single month.
He doubled his prices after the demand surge. At $4,995/month per client, the math was extraordinary.
By March 2022, Brett had broken the $1.5M ARR mark as a true "agency of one" β handling 20-25 active clients with zero employees and just $95/month in tool costs. The margins were unlike anything in the agency world.
Brett has been transparent about the trade-offs. Taking a vacation costs roughly $4,500 per day in lost revenue. The burnout is real. But the freedom and simplicity of the business β no payroll, no office, no management overhead β keeps him going.
Productized services can generate millions with zero employees β the key is ruthless simplification (no calls, no meetings, no onboarding)
Building in public on Twitter can be the single most powerful growth lever for a solo service business
Price for value, not for time β $5K/month for "unlimited" design sounds expensive until clients realize they get 15+ deliverables per month
The subscription model creates predictable recurring revenue that traditional agencies lack
