How Preetam acquired customers
Tools used to build SuperLemon
Preetam Nath and Sankalp Jonna turned a two-week Shopify App Store MVP into SuperLemon, a WhatsApp commerce tool that passed $25K MRR with 20,000 merchants and a two-person team.
Preetam Nath and Sankalp Jonna did not start SuperLemon by guessing at a trendy SaaS category. After two earlier failed startup attempts, they went looking for a market where people were already buying. They browsed marketplaces such as Slack, Atlassian, Chrome, GSuite, and Shopify, then chose Shopify because the app store already concentrated merchants with urgent operational problems and visible willingness to pay.
The product wedge was specific: WhatsApp for Shopify stores. SuperLemon began as a simple chat-button app that let merchants talk to customers where they already were, then expanded into abandoned-cart recovery, order notifications, campaigns, and customer messaging workflows. Sankalp built the first MVP in about two weeks, and the team submitted it to the Shopify App Store instead of waiting for a complete automation suite.
That marketplace-first launch gave them fast proof. Starter Story's founder interview says SuperLemon reached more than 2,000 users in about 40 days, got featured by Shopify, launched paid plans, and crossed $400 MRR in the following 30 days. Preetam's own write-up says that by the end of 2019 they expected $3K MRR but had reached $8K MRR instead. By July 2020, while still a two-person team, they had grown past $25K MRR, 20,000 active merchants, 1,500+ paying customers, 500+ reviews, and a 5.0-star rating.
The repeatable lesson is distribution before product polish. SuperLemon worked because the founders chose a marketplace with built-in intent, shipped the minimum version that solved the job, used strong defaults so merchants saw value quickly, and treated fast support as part of the product. They did not need five half-working acquisition channels. One focused channel, the Shopify App Store, was enough to carry the business to a meaningful recurring-revenue milestone.
Marketplaces can be powerful acquisition channels when users already arrive with a buying problem.
A two-week MVP is enough when it satisfies the first job users came to solve.
Strong defaults shorten time-to-value for small business customers who do not have time for setup work.
One high-intent distribution channel can beat several weak channels when the product is built for that channel.
You have the story. Make it actionable: what worked, what to copy, what to avoid, and which channel to test first.
