Founder stories
The interview says Kleo was at $62K MRR and went from $0 to $62K MRR in three months. The separate $20K MRR Mentions figure was deliberately omitted from this Kleo story.
An AI personal-brand and LinkedIn content workflow for saving ideas, training a writing style, drafting posts, creating graphics, previewing and scheduling content.
How Cam acquired customers
Tools used to build Kleo
Cam Trew, Jake Ward, Lara Acosta and Rob Hoffman rebuilt Kleo from an old LinkedIn extension audience into an AI content workflow that reached $62K MRR in three months without ads or Product Hunt.
Kleo did not start as a cold AI-content launch. Jake Ward had already built an earlier free Chrome extension that helped LinkedIn users see what was trending in their niche. That product reached tens of thousands of users before a LinkedIn cease-and-desist forced it offline. The shutdown hurt, but it left the team with something most new products lack: proof that LinkedIn creators wanted help finding ideas and writing better posts.
When Jake brought the idea for the rebuilt Kleo to Cam Trew, Cam had just left a senior engineering job and was looking for work that felt more meaningful than corporate code. He rebuilt the first working version in about four weeks, leaning on a pragmatic Next.js/TypeScript/Vercel-style stack and AI coding tools so the team could validate quickly instead of polishing architecture. The new product was not just a scraper. It became an all-in-one content workflow: capture inspiration, train on a creator's voice, draft posts, create visuals, preview and schedule publishing.
Distribution was the real advantage. Jake, Lara Acosta and Rob Hoffman already had large LinkedIn audiences and credibility with exactly the people Kleo served. They used that reach to build a waitlist, host pre-launch webinars and masterclasses, share transparent build updates, run a private beta Slack, and show the product being used by its own founders. Cam's Indie Hackers interview says Kleo went from zero to $62K MRR in three months with no ads and no Product Hunt launch, using trusted distribution rather than a broad cold launch.
The useful lesson is not that every founder needs a 300K-follower cofounder. It is that the best AI tools often win when they attach to an existing workflow and an existing trust channel. Kleo had proof from the old extension, an audience that already cared about LinkedIn content, and a team using the product in public before asking others to pay.
A shut-down free tool can still leave behind validated demand, trust and a warm audience for a safer rebuilt product.
AI writing products need a specific workflow and user identity; Kleo narrowed around LinkedIn personal-brand content instead of generic text generation.
Founder distribution works best when the founders are credible users of the product, not just promoters of it.
Private beta communities and fast bug fixes turn early users into collaborators during a compressed launch window.
