How Max acquired customers
Tools used to build Faire
Max Rhodes left Square to fix wholesale. Faire offered retailers net-60 payment terms and free returns β eliminating the risk of trying new brands. Result: $12.4B valuation, 700K+ retailers.
Max Rhodes spent years at Square watching small business owners struggle with wholesale ordering. The process was antiquated: attending trade shows, placing minimum orders from unknown brands, and hoping products would sell. If they didn't? Tough luck β no returns.
Rhodes, along with co-founders Marcelo Cortes, Daniele Perito, and Jeff Kolovson (all former Square colleagues), saw an opportunity to modernize wholesale commerce the same way Square had modernized payments.
Faire launched in February 2017 with two revolutionary policies:
1. **Net-60 payment terms** β Retailers don't pay for 60 days, giving them time to sell products before the invoice is due
2. **Free returns on first orders** β If products don't sell, retailers can return them at no cost
These two policies eliminated the primary reason retailers avoided new brands: risk. Faire absorbed the risk using data science to predict which products would sell in which stores, minimizing actual return rates.
This data advantage meant Faire could offer generous terms while maintaining healthy economics.
Faire's early growth came from direct outreach. The team attended trade shows, not as exhibitors but as attendees, signing up both brands and retailers in person. They also built a "brand referral" program: when a brand joined Faire, they'd invite their existing retailer customers to reorder through the platform.
By 2018, word of mouth was driving growth. Retailers told other retailers about the magical platform where you could try new brands risk-free.
Absorbing risk for buyers (net-60 terms, free returns) is the most powerful way to break into a trust-based, relationship-driven industry like wholesale
Data science as a competitive moat β Faire's algorithms predict what will sell where, enabling generous terms while maintaining healthy economics
Brand referral loops are incredibly powerful in B2B β brands invite their existing retailers, creating organic supply-side growth
Start at trade shows physically to understand the market, then build the digital replacement for the process you've seen firsthand
