How Demi acquired customers
Tools used to build Pika
Demi Guo and Chenlin Meng dropped out of Stanford's AI PhD program after being frustrated with existing AI video tools. They launched Pika on Discord, hit 500K members in 4 months, and raised $135M β all with a team of 13.
Pika started from frustration. During the winter of 2022-2023, Stanford AI PhD students Demi Guo and Chenlin Meng participated in an AI Film Festival organized by Runway, a competing AI video startup. They were deeply unimpressed with the quality of existing AI video generation tools and became convinced they could build something significantly better.
In April 2023, both dropped out of Stanford's PhD program β Guo from NLP and computer graphics research (under Professors Ron Fedkiw and Chris Manning), Meng from her pioneering work on diffusion models. Meng's DDIM paper is foundational to DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion. They founded Pika with a team of three.
Their launch strategy was brilliantly simple: release the beta exclusively on Discord and let the AI-generated videos speak for themselves. Users began creating and sharing videos that went viral on Twitter and social media, driving exponential Discord growth. Within just four months, Pika's Discord server hit 500,000 members, with users generating millions of videos per week.
This explosive community-driven growth attracted Silicon Valley's top angel investors β Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Andrej Karpathy, Aravind Srinivas, and Adam D'Angelo all invested personally. By November 2023, just seven months after founding, Pika launched its 1.0 web app and closed a $55M funding round. In June 2024, they raised another $80M Series B, bringing total funding to $135M while the team had only grown to 13 people.
Discord as a launch channel creates unprecedented community flywheel β every user becomes a community member who creates content that attracts more users
Let the product be the marketing β AI-generated videos are inherently shareable on social media, creating viral organic growth
Deep technical expertise enables speed β PhD-level AI research meant they could build state-of-the-art models from scratch
Small teams with exceptional talent outperform large ones β going from 3 to 13 people while raising $135M shows that in AI, a small research team moves faster
