How Tiago acquired customers
Tools used to build Forte Labs / Building a Second Brain
Tiago Forte developed his note-taking system to cope with a debilitating voice disorder. That personal system became Building a Second Brain, the world's most popular personal knowledge management course.
The story of Building a Second Brain starts with a medical mystery. In his early 20s, Tiago Forte developed a functional voice disorder β a condition that made speaking painful and left doctors baffled. With no cure in sight, Tiago had to get organized about his own health.
He began obsessively capturing every doctor's visit, medication, treatment, and research note in a digital notebook. The act of organizing information so clearly he could recall it instantly β and act on it β helped him manage a condition that felt unmanageable. He called the system his "second brain."
When he started working in corporate consulting in San Francisco, Tiago applied the same system to his work. His colleagues noticed. In spring 2013, he turned a lunchtime workshop on productivity into an online course called "Get Stuff Done Like a Boss." Within a few months, thousands of people from around the world had completed it.
Tiago wrote extensively about his system on his blog at fortelabs.com. Each article brought more subscribers. His work got featured in Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, and Fast Company β all without a PR budget. The writing was the marketing.
In early 2017, he launched "Building a Second Brain" β a structured online course for his complete knowledge management methodology. The name was memorable, the transformation was real, and the timing was perfect: information overload was becoming a universal complaint.
By 2019, Forte Labs had taught more than 20,000 paying customers. By the time the companion book was published by Simon & Schuster in 2022, BASB had become a global movement β with 50,000+ course graduates across 100+ countries, and a New York Times bestseller that reached millions more.
The entire business was built from blog posts, a clear personal story, and a system that genuinely worked.
