Uku posted the beta launch and every early milestone on Indie Hackers as part of a deliberate build-in-public approach, which is where the earliest users came from.

The founders directly credit Indie Hackers as the source of their earliest visitors and paying customers, ahead of any other channel.

“In the early days, our marketing was all about Indie Hackers. First visitors and customers came directly from there.”

Plausible's first real traffic spike came from a blog post reaching the Hacker News front page in mid-2019.

“We had our first traffic spike by getting more than 2,500 visitors in one day.”

A second, more targeted Hacker News front-page hit in April 2020 is the specific post the founders single out as changing their trajectory.

“The post went to the top of Hacker News, and it helped us spread the word about Plausible to more people than ever before.”

When Marko joined as marketing co-founder in March 2020, his first concrete goal was building organic Google search traffic from close to zero, backed by a repositioning of the site and new content.

The founders repeatedly name content marketing and Hacker News together as their two most durable growth channels, years into the business.

“Content marketing and Hacker News are essential to our growth even to this day.”

Plausible runs with no paid advertising and, at least as of late 2021, no formal affiliate program, relying on customers to spread the word themselves.

“We have a $0 paid advertising budget and we don’t have an affiliate program either.”

The founders attribute word-of-mouth growth to the product itself being distinctive enough that satisfied users recommend it unprompted.

“And it drives word-of-mouth as many of the users love the product so much that they share it with their friends and networks.”

Marko emailed a number of influential websites directly seeking coverage; one placement on OpenSource.com became one of Plausible's best trial-signup days to date.

“we were featured on OpenSource.com as a transparent and open source alternative to Google Analytics.”

The founders are candid that this outreach mostly went unanswered, with the OpenSource.com feature being the exception rather than the norm.

“Most sites ended up ignoring our messages.”

Plausible ran a Product Hunt launch in August 2020 as one of several growth pushes that year, alongside Hacker News posts and content marketing.

Plausible's own account only started tweeting in May 2020, well over a year after the product's beta launch, with a positioning-first message aimed at Google Analytics users.

“We also posted our first tweet on May 18th with the message, “Friends don’t let friends use Google Analytics”.”

In September 2019 Uku released the entire Plausible codebase publicly on GitHub, months before any co-founder or dedicated marketing existed.

“One of the main reasons I started Plausible was to provide a more transparent alternative to Google Analytics.”

The founders frame open-sourcing explicitly as a trust-building move in a market where users otherwise have to take data-handling claims on faith.
