Thomas launched the redesigned directory on Product Hunt in October 2022, then launched the pivoted "Product Hunt alternative" on Product Hunt again in February 2024.

Thomas built a Product Hunt inspired badge system that winning products displayed on their own sites, generating backlinks.

“Inspired by Product Hunt, I created a system of badges rewarding the best products.”

The embedded badges acted as backlinks, which he says lifted Uneed's domain rating and organic keyword rankings.

“This gradually increases Uneed's ranking on certain keywords and improves our organic traffic.”

A well-known fellow indie hacker messaged Thomas suggesting he sell written product reviews, which became a new paid offer.

Announcing the new paid review offer on Twitter/X produced sales within hours.

“I announced it on Twitter, and a few hours later, I had made 6 new sales”

The same paid review offer was announced first to Uneed's own weekly email newsletter, which converted within hours.
