After 12 startups in 12 months challenge, Jon found his calling in automated image generation and bootstrapped Bannerbear to $50K+ MRR.
Jon Yongfook spent almost a year burning through his savings attempting the "12 startups in 12 months" challenge. He launched 7 startups but earned no direct revenue.
Juggling multiple startups wasn't working, so Jon focused on one area that interested him — image generation. The new product was called Previewmojo and generated open graph-size images based on templates.
Jon rebranded to Bannerbear and redesigned the marketing site. The rebrand helped drive traffic but didn't translate to many sales. He realized the product was aimed at too small a market.
Jon decided to go all-in on Bannerbear as an API product and launched a new template editor and REST API. This opened up many new use cases.
Over 6 months, Jon divided his time into 50% coding and 50% marketing. He would do one week of code, then spend the following week tweeting and blogging about what he shipped.
Bannerbear hit $10K MRR about a year after launch. Jon found that the more documentation he wrote, the more conversions he got. The product continued growing to $50K+ MRR.
